Quick and Question: DC-3 Type Rating

I've been having trouble slaking my curiosity on this one. I'd be pleased to hear from you if you know the answer.

I've seen that there are separate type ratings for the DC-3 and the DC-3S (the Super DC-3).

Do these separate types require separate check rides? Or is it a common training and examination process, like the BE-400/MU-300 certification?
